Suminigashi Workshop for Children

August 12, 2017

SUMINAGASHITHE MAGICAL ELEMENTS OF NATURE REVEALED IN INK DROPPED ON PAPER a creative process FROM JAPAN over a thousand years ago. EARTH, WIND, WATER AND FIRE emerge as beautiful images on paper in suminagashi. In Eastern art the elements are our partners but not to be controlled when it is on water, and when one does it on a water size thickened with Irish moss, you will see beautiful flowers and scenes of nature that one could not easily paint!

This art is still practiced in Japan by Living Treasures. Ink is floated on water and these bold or intricate images are picked up onto absorbent papers. Create beautiful designs. We will use black sumi and colored inks with applicators and brushes separated and floated by dispersants of soapy water. These beautiful marblings will be works of art, or can be used for further drawing, book arts, calligraphy, cards and collage. Your imagination will be stirred by this elemental ancient art.

Thanks to Susan Sheehan and John O’Callaghan for generously sponsoring this workshop!
